By now many of you will have hopefully seen the movie, Lincoln. I would like to open a conversation that uses this work of art as a source for learning about living processes and ways of creative organisms, namely humans in this case.
I was struck with how much of life is driven by thoughts and decisions made in uncertainty, how each person’s life contributes to what is “becoming.” Also we witness the emergence of coherence, that is a coming to the “sense of the meeting” and the messiness of such a process. How does it work? How do we ever come to agreements and evolve as human beings? Big questions, but Norm was one to tackle such questions. Perhaps in some way I’d like to continue that tradition of process here.

The human living process is truly one of the greatest amazements still largely outside our grasp. Even with all our technology and studies to know it, how we each exist moment by moment, create, and love is a constant source of discovery.

We live. How well we live depends on our appreciation (sensitive understanding) of our home in the world. There seems to be deep changes in our world. It is as if while I am soundly sleeping I am moved to a new location. If the new location is very different I cannot proceed on the basis of memories. I must learn again. I face the unknown.

Facing the unknown can be a terrifying experience. It is not surprising that we invent all sorts of reasons to avoid it. We create frightening myths. Such myths may be based on current truths, but to serve our avoidance needs, they become myths.

Are we there yet? It depends on what is “we” and “there”. I think of we as applying to life; all life. I think of there as being ready to go on a journey. For our time it will be an unprecedented journey. From our human perspective living conditions that used to work no longer do. For example, recent college graduates can no longer find work. What may have been seen, as career paths no longer exist. What may have been seen as financial security no longer works.
