  Sustainability is one of the central ideas of our time. Many of us are familiar with the concepts of sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture, sustainable world populations, sustainable emotional lives, etc. It is time for a sustainable nutrient cycle to be considered.

  As a teenager I found myself in a community that was supportive and striving for emotional health. The people in this community listened to me, believed in me, loved me and taught me how to grow and change. I find that this type of community is vital for my well being. In healthy social groups, being open and vulnerable has allowed me to feel loved and supported for who I am.

  Great journeys can be keystone experiences that enlarge and alter the trajectory of life. One such experience for me was a 2010 motorcycle trip from Maine to the southern tip of South America. I had no idea how this trip was going to transform my life… but I felt that something was waiting for me.
  A couple of years before the journey manifested a friend told me of his dream of traveling to South America on a motorcycle. I was intrigued and got my motorcycle license and a dilapidated old motorcycle. The first time I attempted to ride the motorcycle I dropped it in the driveway, but picked it up with help and tried again. I learned quickly and was proficient before long.

Urban homesteading is a popular and growing lifestyle that can counter many of today’s social, economic and environmental problems. People have ever increasing awareness about issues such as corporate greed and irresponsibility, consumerism, problems with industrial agriculture, environmental degradation, struggling economies and global warming. In addition many people may feel disconnected from wholesome community and the natural world. A quick internet search reveals that modern homesteaders are looking for simpler, more meaningful lives over which they have more control.

In that vein, this column explores sustainable living, practical skills for
nurturing the inner hunter/gatherer and stories from the wilderness.

As a dedicated climber and professional guide, I used to spend my springs climbing big mountains in Alaska. When the rest of the northern world was waking up from the winter slumber, I was extending my winter by two months.  Over the years I climbed Mount McKinley, skied in the Ruth Gorge, traversed the Juneau Icefield, ice-climbed on glacier ice and frozen waterfalls, and guided clients on the ice and snow that I loved.
